Google Earth

Week 1:

Target:

  • Today I will use Google Earth to visit American Symbols

  • Using academic vocabulary and complete sentences (fly to, zoom, street view, horizon, layer, 3D)

  • So that I can learn about our world using a computer

  • I'll know I've got it when I can fly to each American symbol and describe details about the places I visited.

Visit each of these sites on Google Earth by typing in the name and pressing enter:

  • Statue of Liberty

  • White House

  • Madison Elementary Ohio

  • Eiffel Tower

Check out the view from Mount Everest

One of the coolest things about Google Earth is the ground-level view. In cities this works like Google Maps’ Street View — giving you a high-resolution photographic view — but you can also use it in remote places such as the top of Mount Everest! In this case, the imagery is just the standard satellite view, but it still looks pretty cool.

Search for mount everest in Google Earth, which takes you to an aerial view of the mountain, then click and drag the little ‘yellow man’ icon in the top right corner onto the peak of the mountain. You just made the easiest ascent of Everest ever! Use the left and right arrow keys to turn around and admire the view from the top.

Week 2: Wonders of the World

Targets:

  1. I can use my research skills to find a fascinating fact about a Wonder of the World.

  2. I can create a presentation about my Wonder of the World.

Tips

  1. Make sure you are spelling your location name correctly.

  2. Uncheck the box that comes up under the "fly to" locations"  to remove the name of your location

  3. Turn off Photos (the check box under layers)

  4. Turn your 3D buildings layer on (under layers).

  1. Pan in so we can clearly see your location or building.

  2. Tilt the view by pushing down on the mouse wheel  and moving the mouse up or down.
